[ENGLISH BELOW] Salem è una città degli Stati Uniti d'America , nello Stato del Massachusetts.
Il nome della città è nota per i processi alle streghe nel villaggio di Salem svolti a partire dal 1692 dove vennero accusate e torturate centinaia di persone, fu anche l'ultimo del suo genere nelle colonie britanniche del nord america.
Le incriminazioni per stregoneria presero piede velocemente e si estesero come un'epidemia anche nelle città circostanti nel giro di pochi mesi.
Il villaggio di Salem, attualmente chiamata città di Danvers è un insediamento nato poco dopo la prima metà del 1600 da coloni di Puritani che fino al 1700 rimase una frazione della città di Salem per poi ottenere la completa autonomia e diventare una comunità indipendente.
La sede iniziale dei processi fu proprio il villaggio di Salem per poi essere spostati con l'aggravarsi della situazione nella città.
Si pensa che tutto cominciò quando la figlia e la nipote del pastore iniziarono a manifestare comportamenti strani che i medici non riuscivano a spiegare , le ragazze erano note a giocare con strumenti non consentiti legati alla divinazione.
Nei mesi successivi e con l'aumentare degli insoliti comportamenti anche in altre giovani, attribuirono la causa a dei malefici delle streghe.
Da quel momento iniziò una vera e propria isteria collettiva e in tutto il suo orrore la caccia alle streghe.
Provarono diversi metodi popolari per riuscire ad identificare gli abitanti colpevoli dei malefici ma senza ottenere risultati.
Indussero le giovani ad indicare dei nomi e le accusate confessarono sotto tortura.
I nomi degli accusati aumentavano come anche le persone vittime di malefici , le carceri in attesa di processo erano piene e diverse persone morirono durante la detenzione.
Il Massachusetts era senza governatore dal 1689 e solo mesi dopo riuscirono a processare gli abitanti accusati di stregoneria.
Le persone processate furono oltre le 140 , vennero eseguire 20 condanne a morte e solo 1 persona si rifiutò di testimoniare rimanendo in silenzio al suo processo e morì soffocato schiacciato da dei pesi sul petto , pena prevista all'epoca.
Le prove però per le condanne a morte non erano verificabili , tenute in piedi solo da credenze popolari.
L'isteria generale si concluse nella fine del 1692 e nel 1693 si sciolse il tribunale per processare gli accusati di stregoneria.
Da allora nella cittadina non si è più assistito ad altri processi di stregoneria.
Tuttavia continuarono ancora per un po' i comportamenti insoliti tra le giovani , tanto da dare ulteriore conferma a chi pensava che le streghe non erano la causa di questi malesseri ma dovuti a malattie ancora non conosciute. C'era chi addirittura sosteneva che le stesse avevano inventato e alterato di proposito il loro stato di malessere per conflitti interni tra le famiglie più influenti.
Diversi sono i pareri contrastanti , i puritani che mossero le accuse si dividevano tra chi era convinto che i malefici erano opera delle streghe chiamate dalle giovani che si adoperavano con la divinazione , ma c'è chi dopo la conclusione dei processi credeva che la colpa dei malefici era dei nativi americani noti per conoscere le pratiche magiche ,con i quali erano già in guerra per la terra nello stesso periodo.
Attualmente si pensa che questi malesseri più che possessioni e malocchio siano legati ad intossicazione da alcuni funghi parassiti che si annidano nel frumento , provocando allucinazioni , convulsioni , attacchi epilettici , aggressività e perdita della memoria , nel peggiore dei casi anche alla morte o uno stato comatoso.
Situazione nota e analizzata anche in altri anni e paesi , dove questi funghi crearono delle vere e proprie epidemie estese attraverso il pane.
Tutt'ora a Salem è possibile trovare diversi musei legati agli avvenimenti dei processi di cui anche la "The Witch house" la casa del giudice Jonathan Corwin ed è l'unica struttura ancora in piedi a Salem con legami diretti con i processi alle streghe di Salem del 1692.
Ad oggi c'è chi crede che la presenza delle streghe sia ancora presente a Salem insieme ai fantasmi delle vittime innocenti dei processi , diverse sono le segnalazioni di avvistamenti o fatti strani accaduti nei luoghi della città , alcune persone affermano di sentire i canti delle streghe durante i Sabba.

The name of the city is known for the witch trials in the village of Salem which began in 1692 where hundreds of people were accused and tortured, it was also the last of its kind in the British colonies of North America.
The indictments for witchcraft caught on quickly and spread like an epidemic even in the surrounding cities within a few months.
The village of Salem, currently called the city of Danvers is a settlement born shortly after the first half of the 1600s by colonists of Puritans who until 1700 remained a fraction of the city of Salem to then gain complete autonomy and become an independent community.
The initial site of the trials was the village of Salem and then moved with the aggravation of the situation in the city.
It is thought that everything began when the shepherd's daughter and granddaughter began to show strange behaviors that the doctors could not explain, the girls were known to play with tools not allowed related to divination.
In the following months and with the increase of the unusual behaviors also in other young women, they attributed the cause to the witch's evil spells.
From that moment a real collective hysteria began and in all its horror the witch hunt.
They tried different popular methods to be able to identify the guilty inhabitants of the evil ones but without getting results.
They induced the young women to indicate names and the accused confessed under torture.
The names of the accused rose as well as the victims of evil, the prisons awaiting trial were full and several people died in detention.
Massachusetts was without a governor from 1689 and only months later the inhabitants accused of witchcraft were tried.
More than 140 people were tried, 20 death sentences were carried out and only 1 person refused to testify, remaining silent in his trial and he died suffocated crushed by weights on his chest, a penalty foreseen at the time.
The evidence, however, for death sentences was not verifiable, kept only by popular beliefs.
The general hysteria ended in late 1692 and in 1693 the court was dissolved to try the accused of witchcraft.
Since then, no more witchcraft trials have taken place in the town.

However, the unusual behavior among the young women continued for a while, so much so as to give further confirmation to those who thought that witches were not the cause of these ailments but due to diseases not yet known. There were those who even claimed that they had invented and purposely altered their state of malaise due to internal conflicts between the most influential families.
There are several conflicting opinions, the Puritans who moved the accusations were divided between those who were convinced that the evil ones were the work of witches called by the young women who worked with divination, but there are those who after the conclusion of the trials believed that the guilt of the maleficent was of the native Americans known to know the magical practices, with which they were already at war for the earth in the same period.
Currently it is thought that these illnesses rather than possessions and evil eye are linked to poisoning by some parasitic fungi that nest in the wheat, causing hallucinations, convulsions, epileptic seizures, aggression and memory loss, at worst even at death or a comatose state .
Situation known and analyzed also in other years and countries, where these mushrooms created real epidemics extended through bread.
Still in Salem you can find several museums related to the events of the trials including the "The Witch house" the home of judge Jonathan Corwin and is the only structure still standing in Salem with direct links to the witch trials of Salem of 1692.
To date, there are those who believe that the presence of witches is still present in Salem together with the ghosts of the innocent victims of trials, there are different reports of sightings or strange events that occurred in the places of the city, some people claim to hear the songs of witches during the Sabbaths.
