Fin dall'antichità il pendolo è utilizzato in pratiche di Radiestesia (disciplina che intende captare energie dando risposte attraverso diversi strumenti) le radici di questa pratica appartengono all'antica rabdomanzia. Si pensa che il suo primo utilizzo è stato quello divinatorio , si creavano strumenti che captassero le risposte delle Divinità, si prevedeva il futuro e si stabiliva la colpevolezza di un condannato in processo. Con il tempo poi si svilupparono diversi utilizzi e strumenti alcuni utilizzati anche al giorno d'oggi.

Attualmente il pendolo viene utilizzato per divinazioni dove si vuole avere una risposta veloce ad una domanda, per indagare nel personale durante una seduta ma anche trovare qualcosa sia dal punto di vista spirituale che materiale.

Le metodologie di utilizzo sono varie , si passa da utilizzare il pendolo su una tavoletta con le risposte e/o lettere , su una mappa , su oggetti oppure utilizzarlo senza servirsi di nessun'altro strumento ma interpretandone l'oscillazione.
