Pentacolo - Pentacle

Il Pentacolo - The Pentacle

The star enclosed in a circle is called the Pentacle, the star alone is called Pentagram.
In the position where the tip
of the pentagram is turned upwards it is said that the forces of the spirit are represented
that preside over the power of the 4 elements.
A reproduction of the creative process that sustains the universe.
The etymology of the term is not very clear one thinks of a derivation from the Greek prefix penta-, combined with the Latin suffix (construction not entirely extraneous to Medieval Latin) or from the middle French from the word "pendacol" / "pentacol", a neck medallion.
This symbol is present in many cultures, but especially in the esoteric and occult ones it has had greater importance and has always been used as a talisman in different uses.
The pentacle is also considered a representation of the microcosm and the macrocosm. Symbol linked to ancient cults of Venus. Many instead refer to the famous Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci.
This symbol over the centuries has found space in many traditions, part of its symbolism even in Semitic religions.
In fact the pentagram symbolizes the Pentateuch.
The ancient Egyptians used it to denote the kingdom of the Duat tomb, using a hieroglyph,
a circle that internally had drawn a five-pointed star with it facing upwards.
Many followers of Pythagoras have it as a symbol. We also find it in the pentacle of Agrippa.
Over the centuries, this symbol has taken place in different traditions, expanding its meaning.

However, popular belief has it that its meaning was also interpreted negatively, in fact, as several non-Christian symbols, it was transformed into a symbol linked to the dark and totally negative forces with the development of the Catholic religion.
It is therefore thought that from here the Satanists for example took the symbol and turned it with the point pointing downwards, that is towards Satan, the Satanist currents are born in fact as a net opposition to the latter, rejecting the concept of submission of man to God Christian, therefore the two points towards the top symbolize the energy that descends from above going to strengthen the soul of man.

The pentacle is also a very important symbol in the neo-pagan currents, used as an amulet and during rituals.
The word in English is recorded for the first time in 1561, from a previous French use. The French word had the meaning of "talisman", in fact once the term pentacle referred not only to symbols that we have today in our ideal but also to similiar symbols with the task of amulet. The pentacles are also present in the grimoire of the 1500 Heptaméron, from the grimoire of the 17th century Lesser Key of Solomon and many others even more ancient.
In the English tarots, the minor Arcana the seeds of money are called "pentacles", the pentacles, following the innovation of Éliphas Lévi. The first tarot deck published to use a true pentacoli seed was the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck.

To date there are many conflicting thoughts related to its meaning, but its profound representation of balance and cyclicality of things is common to almost all traditions where this symbology is present.
This ancient symbol has always been shrouded in mystery and brings with it great meanings.
